Shehrazade day: Football knows no boundaries Print E-mail

Alaturka cafe - Turkish culture in a tent Thousands of Brisbaners gathered at DM Henderson Park to celebrate world’s oldest civilizations’ music, cuisine and everything sweet they bring to Australia.

Members of the Queensland Intercultural Society were also present at the day where QIS staff delivered free sweets, brochures, information kits and displayed jersey and flags from different countries at their “Football knows no boundaries” campaign stall.

The children of QIS members were also present at the function where the little ones ran around playing either soccer or rugby wearing their favorite clubs or countries jerseys.

The “Football knows no boundaries” program was designed to help build intercultural understanding and respect between young people of Australia. The program works at the grassroots level to help the youth discover bonding in competition - with an emphasis on respect, sportsmanship.

“It was amazing to see how the kids enjoyed themselves” said David Ferrini, one of the directors of the QIS, “Everyone was excited. The fact that they all play soccer, even though they have different ethnic backgrounds, brings them together.”

Kids playing football and displaying jersey of different color and flags, singers and dancers, stalls selling and displaying goodies and food from middle eastern and east mediterrenean countries made sure the event was fun all day around.
